Dare to Begin

February 19, 2016 Leslie Lundgren

Here goes my first blog post. FINALLY... I DARE TO BEGIN. (I have to thank my friend Cristin Priest for this "Dare to Begin" inspiration.)

It has taken me more years than I like to admit to begin this endeavor. Yes, years. For the longest time my website had a heading that said, “blog coming soon.” Over the years I’ve had many friends and clients ask me why I don’t have a blog to share my design ideas and inspirations. I’ve been resistant and as the New Year began I asked myself, why not?

First of all, I don't like to do what I think everyone else is doing. It seemed like “everyone” was writing a blog. Also, I was worried that no one would want to read it, nor be particularly interested in what I have to say. Many blogs seem so witty - I don’t think I can be that witty all the time.

I’m not a big trend follower, especially anything technological. Writing a blog seemed a little “technical” to me, which shows you how far back in time I really am! For example, I was immersed in fine art and antiques during the San Francisco dot-com craze. While the masses were going high tech with an eye on the future, I was finding my inspiration in the past. Progressive in my mind was mixing antique furniture with modern art - an antique French Louis XV marquetry commode with a Diebenkorn painting. Come to think of it, that was actually a bit cutting-edge in the early 2000 days. That was when I should have started a blog!

Of course, there are the other standard excuses such as being incredibly busy with a small business, children and a traveling husband. I recently read something that a fellow designer (thank you, Ruthie Somers) wrote, “No one really cares that much anyway.” Ha! That’s soooo true! I’ve been over thinking it and making excuses. Now that many people have moved on to other things and the market is saturated with design blogs, I’m finally doing it. Perhaps it’s mostly for my own sake, a chance to pull together thoughts and ideas. Maybe it will become a place for my clients, friends and family to widen their own design ideas and personal aesthetic. Whatever the reason, I’m now DARING TO BEGIN. So it here goes, one blog post at a time.
